How to Become an Account Executive

An account executive career can be exciting, hectic, stressful – and very rewarding. After all, you’re working in the middle of a fast-paced business world.

An account executive is a person who has primary responsibility for an account. This person ensures the client is receiving the care promised at the time the business relationship was established.

In advertising, account executives manage account services departments, serving as the direct link between an advertising agency and the client. Account executives maintain the accounts of clients and are typically responsible for client services and client acquisition.

In IT, an account executive is a senior management role responsible for executing large contracts.

In finance, account executives help clients save for retirement and achieve their goals. An account executive is another title for a stockbroker.

Here’s how to get started:

To become an account executive you need at least a bachelor’s degree in business. The majority of account executives have received their undergraduate degrees in finance, economics, business or liberal arts, and have also earned their MBA. Account executives need to be skilled at working with people and distilling ideas and directions in a clear and concise way. Account executives prove themselves by successfully handling accounts and moving on to work on multiple accounts or bigger accounts.

What are Account Executive Salaries?

The salary for account executives can vary widely. Account executives, also called advertising sales agents, have a median annual wage that varies from $38,100 to $62,600, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Financial account executives can expect to make a mean annual wage of $94,180, with an opportunity to earn a substantially higher salary as their client base grows. (Salary data retrieved 3/29/11)

“I loved getting up in the morning to go to school because I knew I was going to learn something and it was going to be fun. And the people I went to school with actually wanted to learn. The energy from the teachers and students it made it, like we belong there. I know I learn way better if I see it, if I feel it. My career is with my hands and if I didn't have that hands-on experience, I wouldn't be the massage therapist I am today. It's a huge difference, I finally feel secure and happy in the work that I do. This is what I want, this is what I'm doing, it's great.”
