Certification

Because most liberal arts students are still deciding on an exact career path, there is no definite set of certifications necessary. It’s recommended by most career counselors, however, that liberal arts students earn either their Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree. You also could continue your studies and earn a Master’s Degree in either liberal arts or a related area of study. Frequently offered liberal arts certifications include:

  • Associate’s Degree
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Master’s Degree

Growth Potential

During an economic downturn, a liberal arts major might be an excellent choice for some students, particularly those who are weighing their overall career options. This is because as a liberal arts student, you receive a foundation in a variety of disciplines. You can augment your education by getting internships, which helps you decide a career path while also receiving on-the-job training. Some career counselors also say that liberal arts majors are more flexible when it comes to changing their careers, which could make you a more attractive candidate in a tough job market.

Degree Length/Time

If you enroll in an Associate’s Degree program in the liberal arts, you can expect to finish it in two years. Bachelor’s Degree programs typically take four years to complete. If you decide to enter graduate school, your Master’s Degree can take two to four years, depending on the program.

How to Become a Book Publisher

A book publisher is the chief executive of a publishing company and is in charge of all aspects of the organization’s business. Publishers are also responsible for implementation of all company policies.

Book Publisher Education

A career in book publishing will typically require at least a four-year degree in business as well as extensive coursework in a corresponding field such as communication or journalism. Most who aspire to become a book publisher begin in a lower position at a small publishing company and work their way up through the ranks of the industry. With the advent of ebooks as a major publishing venue many book publishers are starting their own businesses.

During the first two years of your college experience you will take core classes in mathematics, sociology, computers, economics, communications, statistics, and accounting. The second two years will typically include courses such as marketing, finance, management, operations, and business policy. Because the publishing industry is undergoing major technological changes you should consider classes in digital media and design to round out your knowledge. While attending college you should consider working in a related position such as on the college newspaper or as an intern with a publishing company, as most employers value experience in the book industry as much as education.

Book Publisher Salaries

Because book publishers are the chief executive of their companies, salary information is guarded. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that the median book publisher salary in 2008 was over $52.00 per hour. Due to changes in the book industry as online publishing grows the BLS projects a 19 percent decline in employment in the book publishing industry over the next decade.
