Growth Potential

During an economic downturn, a liberal arts major might be an excellent choice for some students, particularly those who are weighing their overall career options. This is because as a liberal arts student, you receive a foundation in a variety of disciplines. You can augment your education by getting internships, which helps you decide a career path while also receiving on-the-job training. Some career counselors also say that liberal arts majors are more flexible when it comes to changing their careers, which could make you a more attractive candidate in a tough job market.

Degree Length/Time

If you enroll in an Associate’s Degree program in the liberal arts, you can expect to finish it in two years. Bachelor’s Degree programs typically take four years to complete. If you decide to enter graduate school, your Master’s Degree can take two to four years, depending on the program.

How to Become a Photographer

A photography career may be for you if you possess an element of creativity and enjoy taking pictures. A photographer does more than just take pictures, though. A professional photographer takes snapshots that record events, tell stories, and paint pictures. Most photographers use digital cameras, although some choose to use film cameras in their photography careers. The right equipment, including filters, tripods, flash attachments, and lenses are essential for a successful career as a photographer.

A career in photography can be rewarding for people who enjoy working with lighting and camera angles to capture the perfect moment. Choosing the right subjects is also important for professional photographers, as well as learning how to use props and poses to bring out the best when photographing people.

Training Required for a Photography Career

To become a photographer, you need to continue your education beyond high school, although there is no formal educational requirement. Employers generally require candidates to have a four-year degree or a vocational school degree. In addition to courses in photography, students take classes in business and marketing. Photography coursework can include composition, photojournalism, and photographic design; because of rapidly advancing technology you should also consider taking courses in digital design.

Your Portfolio

Experience is important in trying to start a career as a photographer. Joining camera clubs and subscribing to photographic journals can be helpful. One of the most important aspects of your college experience will be developing a portfolio of your best work, which will be submitted to prospective clients and employers when you begin applying for photography jobs.

Photographer Salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median photographer salary is $29,400. The top ten percent of photographer salaries is above $62,400. The middle fifty percent of photographer salaries fall between $20,600 and $43,500. The bottom ten percent of photographer salaries fall below $16,900. (Salary data retrieved 7/11/11)
